AbstractThe origins & functions of Shanghai's Russia Club, a service organization devoted to the business & cultural needs of Russian emigres in 1930s China, is reviewed. All aspects of the club's existence & history are detailed, from building size to membership requirements, events, organizational issues, fees, & its fluctuating roster relative to world events & internal squabbling. The reestablishment of a Russia Club in the 1990s, the first since its WWII demise, is reviewed with similar attention to detail. Changes in operation based on contemporary circumstances are analyzed, including the more transient nature of its membership of students & diplomats as opposed to emigres. In conclusion, the general need for & purpose of the Russia Club is reiterated: preserver of heritage, ambassador of culture, & a means for its expatriates to remain connected to their homeland.
